Adult school students

Some might come in late

Have a buffer period at the beginning: the importance of science, the applicability

Then go to lesson, procedure, demo

Someone if come late can be filled into a group

4 groups/ stations

See the available during those times

  • Intro -> demo -> break

  • Students study for GED class

  • Ice breaker: say a couple words about urself (5 mins)

  • Lesson plan + demo: 15 mins

  • Break out into groups: max 4 stations

  • Areas of biotech: manufacturing, label, marketing public relations -> students try to figure out what one does.

  • Names and something about the area for students to brainstorm

  • Talk about potential earnings you can expect

  • Potential jobs

  • Show the data, companies

  • Just talk? Ppt? Both?

  • Ask critical questions in the end

  • White board

  • Making pamphlets

  • Background knowledge: expect zero experience, basic knowledge in math and science. Explain things simply

  • m1v1=m2v2

  • Make it visual

  • Have a really concentrated solution dyed in red to make dilutions

  • Use coffee, sugar

  • Engage sense

  • Concentration demo: putting sugar into liquid until too much

  • Do sth with food so students can eat or take away

  • Do example of industrial scale: using pumps

  • Do sth more appealing than sweats

  • Give students basic algebra problems to work on

  • Help students review dimensional analysis

  • One general demo

  • Let Stacy knows needed materials

  • Timeline:

  • 0-5 mins: intro and objective: learning dilution, dimensional analysis, solubility

  • Deadline for lesson plan: Nov 3rd, run through the same day

Next week:

  • Finalize on chromatography: check materials if they work

  • Make lesson plan for adult school teaching

  • Ask Olga to come to Kapp class to recruit volunteers for BASF

Watch science documentary, eat food and discuss

Improvements on Chromatography:

  • Almond oil

  • Various

  • Extracts

  • Plastic

  • Pestles and mortars

  • Capillary tubes

  • Column chromatography with sugar in it
